Study in Russia
Everything you need to know before deciding, with the official fees each university publishes, explained by someone who completed a full degree in Moscow and speaks Russian at C2 level.
A serious option, cheaper than you think
Russia has state universities with long traditions, and studying there costs much less than in Europe or the United States. Russia also has good relations with Latin America: it is uncommon for a Latin American with documents in order to be refused a student visa.
- State diploma: an official degree recognised in Ecuador and the rest of Latin America.
- Regional universities with tuition from about $2,500 a year.
- Programmes in Russian and, at several universities, also in English.
- You learn a new language that opens professional doors.
State universities you can apply to
These are state universities that accept international students directly. I have no agreements with them and take no commissions: you apply directly to the university and I guide you through the whole process. They are examples: we choose together, based on your degree and your budget.
Russian New University (RosNOU)
This is where I studied my degree, the university I know best from the inside. It is private and awards a state-recognised diploma. There is no agreement in place today: the one I signed in 2012 has ended. But I keep a good relationship with the university, and it is the first one I can recommend from first-hand experience.
Programmes and fees 2026/2027 (in Spanish) →RUDN University (Peoples' Friendship University of Russia named after Patrice Lumumba)

Saint Petersburg State University (SPbU)
One of the most prestigious in the country. Medicine and dentistry also in English, and English-taught master's in business and finance.
Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU)
Engineering and technology. International business bachelor's in English and a preparatory year in several formats.
Sechenov University
Russia's best-known medical university. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in Russian or English.
Ural Federal University (UrFU)
Large and cheaper than Moscow. Many master's programmes in English: artificial intelligence, business, energy and engineering.

One of the cheapest. English-taught programmes in economics, international relations and technology.
Irkutsk State University (ISU)
Very affordable, in Siberia near Lake Baikal. Computing, economics, law and international relations.
Novosibirsk State University (NSU)
Strong in science. Medicine with the first years in English, and master's programmes in English.
Rostov State Medical University
For studying medicine at a lower cost, in Russian or English.

Besides the university, you pay at real cost: the visa (current consulate fee), certified translations, apostilles, document shipping and EMS delivery of the invitation if it comes on paper.
What do you need?
- A valid passport, with at least 18 months of validity from the start of your studies.
- Your school diploma and transcript for a bachelor's. For a master's or PhD, your degree and transcript.
- Those documents apostilled and translated into Russian.
- A medical certificate and a negative HIV certificate, less than 12 months old.
About entrance exams: Russia has no national exam like China, but each university assesses international applicants in its own way: a document review, an interview or short tests (for example chemistry and biology for medicine). PhD applicants always take a subject exam. We prepare you for each case.
I do plain translations for free. If a document needs a certified translation, you pay what the notary or sworn translator charges.
The Russian preparatory year
Russian-taught programmes start with a preparatory year at the same university: you learn the language from scratch and get ready to follow classes. You don't need to know Russian before you go. If you choose an English-taught programme, you don't need that year.
I went through the same thing: I arrived in Moscow without speaking Russian and today I speak it at C2 level. I know how hard the first year is and I prepare you for it.
When should you start?
| University | Document submission |
|---|---|
| St Petersburg (SPbU) | 20 June to 10 July (bachelor) |
| Polytechnic (SPbPU) | Until 1 July, for visa-required countries |
| Urals (UrFU) | 20 June to 1 August |
| RUDN | 20 June to 10 August (bachelor) |
| Irkutsk (ISU) | Before 1 June |
Each year's rules are published in February and classes start in September. The visa invitation takes 4 to 6 weeks.
Ideally, write to me early in the year. Apostilles and translations take weeks, and some universities close in early July.
The visa and your first days in Russia
Invitation
The university processes your study invitation. It takes 4 to 6 weeks. If it is sent on paper, it arrives by EMS.
Student visa
With the invitation, your passport, the medical certificate and the HIV certificate, you get the visa at the Russian consulate. You hand in your passport yourself.
Health insurance
Compulsory for your whole stay. Without it you may be refused entry.
Migration registration
Right after arrival, within one to three days depending on the university. The university helps you.
Medical exam, fingerprints and photo
Compulsory within the first 90 days.

We track your invitation and prepare your consulate appointment.

What to bring, how to get there, accommodation, migration registration and the medical exam.
What I tell you honestly
Nobody can guarantee your visa
Only the embassy decides. It is uncommon for a Latin American with documents in order to be refused.
Your passport is always yours
It only leaves your hands when you hand it in at the embassy. If someone asks to keep your passport, be wary.
I don't give scholarships
Russia decides who gets its government scholarship. If you apply, I can help you put together your application for $150, and the step-by-step guide is free.
The university that suits you
Not the one that pays me. I don't charge universities commissions.
Guidance for Russia: $700, all inclusive
If you live in Spain: €700. The assessment is free.
If you don't get a place or your visa is refused, I refund half: $350. This doesn't include what was paid to the university or the embassy.
